History of William Shakespeare Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest writers that ever lived. He wrote at least 37 plays and 154 sonnets.

He was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon, England. His parents were John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. He was their third child. His father was a wealthy merchant. As a child, young Will Shakespeare probably attended Stratford Grammar School and learned such subjects as English, Greek, and Latin. Records show he was a fairly wild young man.

In 1582 he married Anne Hathaway who was eight years his senior. In 1583 they had a daughter, Susanna, and two years later twins, Hamnet and Judith.

Little is known about Shakespeare's life between 1585 and 1592. It is known that he left his wife and family to become an actor and writer in London. His acting company was called "The King's Men" and often appeared at the Globe Theater of which Shakespeare was part owner.

In 1611 Shakespeare left the active life of the theater and returned to a life of leisure in Stratford. Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616. He left behind a treasury of writing for young and old to enjoy.
